coimbatore: The special meeting of the Coimbatore Corporation council began with a walkout by the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) councillors protesting against the failure of the State Government in pressurising the Centre to intervene and ensure a ceasefire in Sri Lanka. The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the ruling Congress moved a resolution seeking ceasefire in the ethnic war- prone island nation.
The meeting was presided by over Mayor R. Venkatachalam along with Deputy Mayor N. Karthik, ruling party floor leader R.S. Thirumugam besides Corporation Commissioner Anshul Mishra and Deputy Commissioner V. Shantha.
The meeting took up nine resolutions of which six pertained to finalisation of tenders.
It passed resolutions seeking the approval of the council for forwarding the bids in order to finalise the tenders for the works relating to part IV, V and VI of the Pilloor Water Supply Scheme and part I and II of the Under Ground Drainage (UGD) scheme of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM).
The council also passed a resolution to provide 25 X 20 space in addition to the 10 X 11 at the Tatabad complex as per the request.
The resolution said that a sum of Rs. 50 lakh was availed from the National Agriculture Development Board and National Fisheries Development Board for setting up a state-of-the-art fish market.
Congress member V.K.S.K. Senthilumar objected to the presence if fish shops in the area and said that they were not only causing traffic jams but also were causing health hazards in the area.
The last resolution decided to allocate the whole sale fish market of the Corporation on Ukkadam bypass road on a long-term rental basis to the Fisheries Department with the aim to set international standards in hygiene in fish trade.
